Comprehensible input is a language learning theory developed by linguist Stephen Krashen in the 1980s. The core idea is simple but powerful: we acquire language when we understand messages that are slightly above our current level.
The i+1 Hypothesis
Krashen uses the formula i+1 to describe optimal input:
- i = your current language level
- +1 = input that's just slightly more advanced
When you encounter language that's too far above your level, you can't understand it, so you can't learn from it. When it's at or below your level, you're not pushed to grow. The sweet spot is content you can mostly understand, with just enough new vocabulary and structures to expand your knowledge.
